The Sweetness of Sorrow
To live in this world you must be able to do 3 things:
To love what is mortal,
To hold it against your bones
Knowing your own life depends on it and
When the time comes, to let it go.
-Mary Oliver
Welcome to Sweet Sorrow
Sweet Sorrow grew out of Sherry Cormier’s personal experiences with loss over the last decade. Her beloved husband Jay, was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer and died six months later, shortly after the passing of Sherry’s father. Over the next few years, her mother, the dog she adopted as a rescue after Jay passed, and her sister and only sibling also died. Sherry says “Processing grief was central to my psychology practice; I never imagined it would become so salient to my life.”
Unlike books written in the immediate aftermath of after losing a loved one, Sweet Sorrow was written in the decade following the loss of Sherry’s husband and family of origin. The passage of time allowed her to chronicle the oscillations of grief and bereavement over a longitudinal period, and to gain perspective on the meaning of loss for growth and transformation. Readers comment on the positive, hopeful tone of the book.
Sweet Sorrow is part memoir, part guidebook. Sherry shares the story of living with Jay’s diagnosis, what it was like when he died, and how she came to be present to life more fully in the years following loss. She also describes some surprising discoveries she’s made in the last decade including spiritual and metaphysical connections and post traumatic growth. Sherry offers a number of tips from her psychological expertise about ways to grow and even thrive after traumatic loss as well as recommendations for caregiving and for helping others with loss related issues.
